Hey Plumster,
It's almost time to say hello to winter, to warm blankets, hot coffees or teas (you do you!), and, of course, delicious fried food.
But is your skin ready for the dry, chilly winter winds?
Maybe not!
The secret to avoiding dry, flaky skin isn’t waiting for winter to come—but getting ready before it hits.
In this issue of “Beauty Simplified”, I am here to share some simple yet effective tips to prepare for the upcoming winter.
1. Switch your moisturizer
While you set aside your summer dresses to make space for pullovers, it’s time to do the same with your lightweight lotions too.
Switch to thick, creamy moisturizers packed with ceramides and natural oils to lock in hydration and strengthen your skin barrier.
Start now, and your skin will be ready when the dry weather hits.
2. Add a hydrating serum or essence
Before moisturizing, nourish your skin with a hydrating serum or an essence like hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate your skin cells.
However, consider your skin type to avoid clogging pores or breakouts.
3. Go easy on exfoliation
Gentle exfoliation regularly helps clear away dead skin cells, helping your moisturizer penetrate deeper.
However, keep it light in winter.
Do not exfoliate your skin more than once a week to avoid irritation or dryness.
4. Do not skimp up on SPF
The onset of winter is not an excuse to skip sunscreen.
Your skin is equally vulnerable to sun damage and sunburn in cold winter months as in summer.
Therefore, always apply nourishing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above.
5. Don’t Forget Those Lips
Dry, chapped lips are a classic winter problem. Start using a rich lip balm before winter hits.
Keeping your lips hydrated early on will prevent cracking and discomfort.
With a few tweaks in your skincare routine, you’ll be ahead of the game when winter officially arrives.
Keep your skin hydrated, and ready for anything the cold can throw at you.

Hey Plumster,

However, I often find myself spending my entire evening trying to achieve flawless makeup 🙁.
If you are like me, here is a little secret —your skin can steal the show without a single drop of makeup.
After all, it’s all about glowing from within and letting your unfiltered skin do the talking for you.
So here are some easy yet effective ways to be festive ready, naturally, in this “Beauty Simplified” issue.
Tips to glow without makeup!
1. Hydration is key 💧
Glowing skin starts from adequate hydration. Keeping your skin well moisturized gives it that plump, dewy look everyone craves. Opt for a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer that absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy residue.
A night before the festivities starts, pamper yourself with a face mask to give your skin a boost of hydration.
Remember—hydrated skin is happy skin!
Plum tip: Drink plenty of water, too. Hydration from the inside out makes all the difference!
2. Exfoliate for that glow ✨
Regular exfoliation helps slough off dullness to reveal natural radiance to the surface.
Use a gentle exfoliator like a scrub or chemical peel 1-2 times weekly for clearer and more glowing skin.
Plum Tip: Avoid over-exfoliating, especially close to the festivities, to avoid any irritation.
3. Brighten Up with Vitamin C 🍊
Vitamin C is the trick to getting naturally glowing skin without makeup.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps fade dark spots, and even out your skin tone, leaving you with a radiant glow that shows!
Plum-tip: Include vitamin C serum in your routine every day.
Read more about its usage here.
4. Nourish from the Inside 🍃
Festive glow isn’t just about what you put on your skin—it’s about what you feed your body too!
Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, and healthy fats that nourish your skin from within.
A balanced diet will make your skin look and feel its best, naturally.
You’ve Got This—No Makeup Required!
Festive glow-up doesn’t have to mean layers of makeup. With the right skincare habits, your natural skin can shine just as brightly.
Keep it simple, focus on hydration, and let your healthy skin do all the talking this festive season!

Ceramides are everywhere today!

Hey Plumster,
Ceramides are everywhere today!
On your feed, dermat’s recommendations, influencer’s reel, and even in beauty articles.
But have you ever wondered why?
In this edition of “Beauty Simplified”, let’s break down ceramides and understand why you need them.
P.S. You might relook at your beauty shopping carts after this!
What are ceramides exactly?
Think of ceramides as the glue that keeps your skin cells together.
They make up about 30-40% of your outer skin layer (the epidermis) and your hair cuticles, acting as the first line of defense against damage.
Moreover, they maintains your skin barrier and keeps irritants at bay.
Such a superstar they are!
Why do you need ceramides?
As we age, our ceramide levels drop, leaving our skin vulnerable to dryness, irritation, and premature aging.
Additionally, without adequate ceramides, your skin is exposed to harmful elements, making it crucial to replenish them for a healthy, resilient complexion.
In short, you need ceramides because, without them, your skin is bare against harmful elements without any protection.
Ceramides = Healthy Skin, but how?
- Ceramides help repair damaged skin and prevent moisture loss, keeping your skin hydrated and resilient.
- By strengthening the barrier, ceramides reduce irritation and make your skin more tolerant to environmental aggressors.
- Ceramides protect against the loss of collagen and elasticity, keeping your skin firm and smooth.
Is it enough?
No, it is not. Your skin barrier needs some more! A strong barrier needs a blend of ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol in a 2:1:1 ratio.
We have exactly that for you in our Oat & 1% Ceramide Barrier Love Face Cream.
With clinically proven benefits like deep nourishment and barrier strengthening, you should try this dermat-tested moisturizer if you love ceramides.
Who can use ceramides?
Ceramides have a rich, creamy texture and so is best for normal, dry, very dry, and sensitive skin for deep moisturization.
How to get the maximum goodness of ceramides?
- Opt for skincare products enriched with ceramide as their main ingredient.
- Apply ceramide-based moisturizer or lotion after washing your face to seal in hydration and prevent water loss.
- Layer them with hydrators like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to lock in moisture.
Whether your skin is dry, sensitive, or just needs extra care, ceramides will repair your damaged skin barrier and protect it from external factors.
Try ceramides today.

Hey Plumster,
While your favorite fragrance may not literally summon angels from the sky (IYKYK!), its charm is definitely hard to resist!
But if you have to reapply your perfume multiple times throughout the day, we know it’s no longer fun!
So we have some solutions!
Let’s learn a few simple tricks in this “Beauty Simplified” issue to extend the life of your favorite scent and keep smelling fabulous from morning till night.
How to increase the longevity of your perfume.
1. Hydrated skin is the key
Perfumes tend to last longer on well-moisturized skin. Before applying your fragrance, make sure your skin is hydrated.
A hydrating moisturizer, lotion, or body oil can create a perfect base for your perfume, helping it cling to your skin better and last longer.
2. Apply perfume to pulse points
Pulse points are areas where your blood vessels are closest to the skin, generating more heat, which helps diffuse and amplify your fragrance.
Apply your perfume on pulse points such as the wrists, neck, behind the ears, and the inner elbows for a longer-lasting effect.
3. Don’t rub your wrists together
Rubbing your skin together might seem like the most obvious thing to do after applying perfume, but this can actually break down the fragrance molecules and cause the scent to fade faster.
Instead, gently press your wrists together or simply let the perfume air dry.
4. Store Your Perfume Properly
How you store your perfume matters!
Keep your bottles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, as exposure to these elements can break down the fragrance and reduce its longevity.
A well-stored perfume maintains its integrity and scent strength for a longer time.
P.S. Some secret tips:-
5. Layer your perfumes:
Layering your perfume with matching body products like shower gel, lotions, body mist, oils, or all of the above!
This will help accentuate the fragrance and help it linger longer on your skin.
6. Carry your scent along
Carry a travel-sized bottle of your perfume.
Quickly spritz on your pulse points during the day and smell fresh without overwhelming your senses.
Use these simple yet effective tips to enjoy your signature scent and make your fragrance work its magic for hours, be it through a body mist or perfume.

Hey Plumster,
Knowing how to Pair serums can be the ultimate game changer in your skincare routine.
(P.S. Need a refresher on serum pairing? Check out the last issue here.
However, understanding the minute details of layering skin serums can ensure you get the maximum benefit out of it.
So in this issue of “Beauty Simplified”, let’s look at some tips on how to layer your serums for that perfect skincare routine.
Secret tips for serum layering no one tells you about
1. Stick to Two
Limit yourself to two active ingredients at a time. Using more can dilute their effectiveness and overwhelm your skin, leading to dryness and breakouts.
2. Watch the Concentration
Pay attention to the concentration levels. Avoid pairing high-concentration serums together.
For instance, while using a 15% vitamin C serum, don’t pair it with niacinamide above 5%. Start low to prevent adverse reactions.
3. Patch Test Always
Whether you’re new to serums or trying a new combo, patch test first.
Apply a small amount on your inner elbow and wait 24 hours. No irritation? You’re good to go.
4. Layer light to heavy
Apply water-based serums first, followed by oil-based or heavier ones. This ensures better absorption and maximizes benefits.
5. Give it time
Patience is the key! Let the first serum fully absorb before applying the next.
This can take a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the product.
6. Follow the Right Order
Serums should enhance your routine, not replace it. Apply serums after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing. Don’t forget sunscreen during the day!
7. Timing is Everything
Not all serums are day-friendly. Retinol, for example, should only be used at night and sparingly. Understand when and how often to use each serum for optimal results.
By layering your serums correctly, you'll easily elevate your skincare game and target multiple concerns.
Ready? Set. Glow!

Whether you're into a simple 3-step routine or a more elaborate 10-step ritual, there's no denying that face serums can be game-changers for your skincare.
These potent "drops in a bottle" are designed to penetrate deep into your skin, delivering faster and more effective results.
But here’s a little secret: the real magic of serums lies in how you layer and pair them. When done right, pairing serums can enhance their effects, tackling multiple skin concerns at once.
In this edition of “Beauty Simplified,” we’ll learn the tricks of pairing face serums like a pro.
What is Serum Layering?
Serum layering involves applying multiple serums one after the other in the same routine.
Pairing, on the other hand, is about using different serums in separate routines—like alternating them between morning and night (AM & PM) or on different days.
Both techniques, when mastered, can significantly boost your skincare results.
But remember, always patch test first!
How to Pair Your Serums:
Hyaluronic Acid:
Hyaluronic acid serum pulls moisture into your skin, leaving it plump, and smooth, while minimizing fine lines. For best results, apply it on damp skin.
Niacinamide:
Niacinamide brightens your complexion, smoothens texture, and fades those pesky spots and blemishes. The most versatile of all, it can be paired with all active ingredients.
A word of caution: Always pair niacinamide serum with a lower concentration of actives.
For e.g., if you wish to pair 15% vitamin C serum with Niacinamide, ensure it is 5% niacinamide and not 10%.
Vitamin C:
Want that lit-from-within glow? Vitamin C serum is your go-to. It diminishes dark spots, pigmentation, and discoloration, making your skin look vibrant and even-toned.
Salicylic Acid:
The acne warrior, salicylic acid, keeps breakouts at bay by unclogging pores, regulating oil, and reducing inflammation.
Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin.
Alpha Arbutin:
Alpha Arbutin works wonders on hyperpigmentation, effectively reducing tanning and melasma and evening out your skin tone.
Azelaic Acid:
Alpha Arbutin works wonders on hyperpigmentation, effectively reducing tanning and melasma and evening out your skin tone.
Retinol:
The ultimate anti-aging ingredient, retinol stimulates collagen production, softening fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a nighttime superstar, but remember to start slow.
Pro Tip: Always consider the concentration of the serums you’re pairing.
Layering two high-concentration actives can lead to sensitivity, so be mindful of your skin’s tolerance.

Expert tips to remove dark spots

Hey Plumster,
While beauty is subjective, there's no denying that healthy, radiant skin can enhance your natural glow!
However, issues like hyperpigmentation and dark spots can dim that radiance, leaving your skin looking dull and uneven.
Thankfully, with the right knowledge and products, you can effectively fade those pesky dark spots and restore your skin's natural glow!
As we gear up for the upcoming festive season, let’s look at some tips to remove hyperpigmentation in today’s "Beauty Simplified" issue.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
First, let's clarify the basics.
Pigmentation is not the same as having hyperpigmentation in your skin!
The term "pigmentation" refers to the color of your skin, which is determined by the amount of melanin present.
Whereas, “hyperpigmentation” occurs when your skin produces excess melanin, leading to unevenly distributed dark spots or patches.
How can you remove hyperpigmentation?
1.Sheild your skin from sun damage:
UV exposure is the primary cause of dark spots. Protect your skin by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day—even in winter or on cloudy days.
Remember to reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors or swimming.
They help in more ways than just preventing dark spots!
For extra protection, befriend wide-brimmed hats, scarves, and sunglasses for sunny days!
2.Opt for active ingredients to fade off those pesky spots!
Vitamin C and alpha arbutin are the two potent active ingredients that can gradually help you fade off hyperpigmentation while giving you a healthy glow.
You can opt for a vitamin C serum for dark spots or Alpha arbutin serum for a gentler alternative.
3.Exfoliate Regularly (But gently!)
Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and encourages cell turnover, facilitating faster dark spot removal.
You can opt for gentle chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs, to gently exfoliate your skin.
You can also use physical exfoliators like face scrubs, for the same.
However, restrict the exfoliation process to 1-2 times a week.
4.Hydrate your skin thoroughly
Well-hydrated skin repairs itself more efficiently.
Hydrate your skin twice a day with a nourishing formula.
However, ensure you keep your skin type in mind while picking moisturizers.
And don't forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from within.
5.Maintain a Healthy Diet
Your diet plays a crucial role in skin health.
Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, and antioxidant-rich foods, and try to minimize sugar and processed foods, which can worsen pigmentation.
6. Avoid Picking at Acne
Picking or squeezing pimples can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Avoid touching your face to prevent scarring and dark spots; instead, opt for acne treatments to prevent inflammation and hyperpigmentation.
Consistency is key to achieving healthy glowing skin. Follow these tips regularly for clear, flawless skin that glows from within.

Easy tips for perfect cleanse!
30th Jul 2024
Hey Plumster,
Ever blamed your face wash for not giving you the desired glow-up? It may not be the product's fault, but in fact, how it’s used.
Cleansing your face daily is essential, but using your face wash correctly is key to cleanse your skin thoroughly.
So, in this“Beauty Simplified”issue, let’s look at 5 common mistakes you might make while using a face wash.
1. Not Following the 60-Second Rule
Massage your face wash onto your skin for at least 60 seconds, focusing on the sides of the nose and mouth.
This allows the ingredients to penetrate properly and work effectively.
2. Using Hot Water
Hot water strips your skin of natural oils, leaving it dehydrated, irritated, and tight.
Instead, opt for lukewarm water to open your pores without causing damage.
3. Washing Too Often
Experts recommend washing your face no more than twice a day. Over washing can lead to dryness and irritation.
Cleanse once in the morning and double cleanse before bed to maintain a healthy balance.
4. Washing with Dirty Hands
Always wash your hands before cleansing your face.
Dirty hands can transfer bacteria and impurities to your skin, undoing all your hard work.
5. Not Using the Right Cleanser
Your skin might not be the same as your sister's. So no, you cannot steal her face wash!
Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type—gel-based for oily skin, cream-based for dry skin, and gentle foaming cleansers for combination skin.
Read more about choosing the right face wash for your skin type here.
Cleansing your face of all impurities is the first step to achieving clear, healthy skin.
Done right, your skincare is half done!
So, keep these tips in mind while you wash your face the next time and see your skin change!

Hey Plumster,
That moistzers are essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin is well-known.
However, when the monsoon humidity hits, your go-to, creamy or even lotion-y moisturizers can turn your skin into a greasy, sweaty mess.
Enter oil-free moisturizers—game-changers of hydration without the extra oiliness and unnatural shine.
In this edition of "Beauty Simplified," we're exploring the benefits of oil-free moisturizers.
We'll cover what they are, who they’re best for, and why they're ideal for the warm and humid months ahead.
What is an Oil-Free Moisturizer?
Before science made it possible, moisturizers almost always had oils in them (or were oils themselves).
The primary mechanism of action was to prevent moisture loss from the skin by forming a water-repelling layer (also known as occlusion).
However, this can be a heavy, greasy affair especially in humid weather.
An oil-free moisturizer, however, does exactly what it says on the label—it provides lightweight hydration, minus the oils.
These moisturizers typically have a water or gel base and are enriched with humectants like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide to lock in moisture without clogging pores.
An oil-free moisturizer provides lightweight hydration.
Why choose oil-free moisturizers for the monsoons?
The combination of heat and humidity can trigger the overproduction of sebum, leading to oily, sticky skin.
Using a rich, creamy moisturizer in such conditions can make the problem worse.
In contrast, oil-free moisturizers are lightweight, absorb easily, and nourish your skin without adding extra oil, making them perfect for this season.
(Wondering if you need moisturizers this season? Click here to know the cruciality of moisturization, come rain or shine!)
Who can use an oil-free moisturizer?
If your skin conforms to any of the below categories, you would love an oil-free moisturizer!
Oily Skin: If you’re prone to shine, oil-free moisturizers can keep your skin hydrated without adding to the oiliness.
Acne-Prone Skin: These moisturizers won’t clog your pores, helping to prevent breakouts.
Combination Skin: Balances the oily and dry areas of your face, providing just the right amount of hydration where you need it.
Anyone Needing Lightweight Hydration: If creamy moisturizers feel too thick in the humidity and heat, you need an oil-free option.
However, when shopping for skincare, ensure that the moisturizer you choose is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and tailored to your skin type.
Pro tip: Try a small amount first to see how your skin reacts.
Here are some reliable options to try:
Green Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer: Perfect for oily and acne-prone skin, packed with antioxidants, and designed to control sebum production.
2% Niacinamide & Rice Water Gel Cream: A lightweight moisturizer, enriched with rice water and niacinamide, it provides non-greasy moisturization while fading blemishes.
Hydrate wisely and enjoy the glow without the grease.

In this “Beauty Simplified” issue, let's explore why our skin gets greasy in humid weather and tips to manage it.
Why Does Oily Skin Overreact in Humid Weather?
Humidity makes sebaceous glands (the helpful little glands under the skin that keep it moisturized) overactive, producing more sebum than needed.
This leads to oilier skin, clogged pores, and acne breakouts, especially in summer and monsoon.
5 Practical Steps to Manage Your Skin in Monsoon
1.Cleanse Thoroughly (But Gently)
- Start with a gentle cleanser every morning to remove excess oil and impurities.
Look for products with salicylic acid or green tea to control sebum without stripping natural moisture.
Too much of “squeaky clean” harsh cleansing can actually trigger the sebaceous glands into producing more sebum, making skin oilier!
- Before bed, double-cleanse your skin using a lightweight cleansing oil, followed by a gentle face wash.
- Incorporate toners to remove leftover product buildup, balance skin pH, and minimize pores.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
- Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera to balance and nourish your skin.
Again, leaving skin too dry will lead to
sebum over-production & imbalance.
- Consider a niacinamide-based moisturizer to regulate sebum production.
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to flush out toxins and stay hydrated from within.
3. Maintain a Healthy Diet
- What you eat can impact your skin! According to experts, highly processed foods which are high in glycemic index, can increase acne breakouts and should be avoided.
Instead, drink plenty of water, and include fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, and legumes in your diet.
- Avoid excessive sugar and fried foods and reduce intake of stimulants like coffee, tea, and colas, which can exacerbate oily skin.
Yeah, we know it’s tough. But it’s worth it :)
4. Use Blotting Paper
- Blotting paper can be your best friend in managing excess oil throughout the day.
It might not control sebum production but can help absorb excess oil and keep your skin shine-free without disturbing your makeup.
5. Opt for Light Makeup
- Heavy makeup coupled with sweat & sebum can clog your pores, causing acne breakouts.
Pick light, waterproof makeup that allows your skin to breathe during heat and humidity, and always remove makeup before bed.
And that’s it. :)
Stay radiant and shine-free all monsoon long with these simple tips and explore our range of oily skincare products here.

Hey Plumster,
It's funny how hair effortlessly grows on your arms and legs, but it seems to take forever on your head, isn’t it? I get it.
That's why I'm here. In this issue of “Beauty Simplified,” discover 5 simple, science-backed tips to boost hair growth and get longer, healthier hair that’s strong from the roots.
1.Oil massage = Scalp food
Think of your scalp as the soil from which your hair grows. A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair growth!
Regular oil massages with nourishing oils like argan, coconut, olive, and jojoba boost blood circulation in the scalp, activating hair follicles and promoting growth.
Plum Tip - Massage your scalp with your fingertips for a few minutes every day.
This increases blood circulation, delivering more nutrients to your hair follicles.
Plus, it feels like a mini spa treatment at home!
2.Your Hair Loves Deep Conditioning!
Deep conditioning treatments and hair masks are essential for maintaining healthy hair growth.
They replenish moisture, repair damage, and strengthen your strands.
Treat your hair to a deep-conditioning mask once a week, and watch it thrive!
Plum Tip: For best results apply hair mask only on your hair strands (not on the scalp) and wash it off thoroughly with warm water.
3.The Secret Lies in Your Diet
Just like your body, your hair needs adequate nourishment to grow.
Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals. Include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
Don’t forget B12 vitamins and biotin—your hair will thank you!
Plum Tip: Consider hair supplements to replenish nutrient deficiencies.
However, always consult a healthcare professional first.
4. Happy You, Happy Hair!
A healthy lifestyle is key to hair growth. Stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, smoking, and insufficient exercise can all impact hair health.
Engage in stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation, or dance classes to keep stress levels in check and promote hair growth.
Plum Tip: Adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet are your hair’s best friends.
When your body is healthy, your hair can thrive too!
5. Hair Treatments
Hair growth treatments can give your hair the extra boost it needs. But do make sure you check that the ingredients are safe for long-term use before trying them out for yourself.
Ingredients like anagain™, redensyl™, rosemary, and ginseng are well proven to support hair health and stimulate growth, without side effects.
Plum Tip: Consistency is key to visible results.
Apply your hair growth serum twice daily without fail and stick to the regime for as long as is recommended.
And use gentle shampoos to accompany this regime.
At Plum, we’re proud to have developed a hair growth serum with clinically proven actives, rosemary and ginseng. It enhances scalp and follicular health and boosts hair growth.

Hey Plumster,

But is this really true?
Let’s dig into the facts.
The real deal on sulphates.
Sulphates aren't inherently bad. In fact, they can be beneficial for your skin and hair when used correctly.
Curious to know how?
Let's break it down in this issue of “Beauty Simplified”.
What are sulphates?
Sulphates are surfactants or detergents that act like tiny cleaning agents, giving you a thorough cleanse.
They’re known for their powerful cleaning abilities, helping remove grime, dirt, impurities, and oil from your skin and hair.
The two most commonly used sulphates in cleansing formulations are:
🧴SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate):
SLS is a highly effective cleanser that can sometimes be a bit harsh, potentially stripping away natural oils and leading to dryness or irritation.
🧴SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate):
SLES (the E is from the LaurEth, instead of Lauryl – note the nuance!) is the gentler and more polite cousin of SLS.
It cleans effectively without compromising your skin's delicate moisture balance.
It helps create a luxurious lather, leaving you feeling clean and refreshed.
But are sulphates the enemy?
Not necessarily!
SLES can be a fantastic choice for those seeking a thorough cleanse without sacrificing comfort, even for people with sensitive skin.
However, the confusion around sulphates and the demand for gentler cleansers has led some brands (including us) to provide sulphate-free options.
But a sulphate-free formula doesn’t always mean better.
It’s all about the entire formula and how it’s made, rather than just what’s present or absent in the product.
So which one should you use: sulphated or sulphate-free?
The best cleanser for you depends on your needs and preferences.
Your skin type and lifestyle are also some factors you must consider while choosing cleansers for you.
Whether it’s shower gels, face washes, or shampoos, look for products that:
- Contain skin-loving ingredients, regardless of their sulphate content.
- Effectively cleanse your skin and scalp without stripping away essential oils.
My recommendations from Plum:
Explore cleansers with SLES (the good guy) like:
- Green Tea Pore Cleansing Face Wash
- Coconut Milk & Peptides Shampoo
These will make your skin and hair squeaky clean, removing dust, oil, and humidity without compromising your skin!
But, if you prefer sulphate-free, you can try the
- 1% Salicylic Acid Face Wash or
- Olive & Macadamia Shampoo
for gentle yet effective cleansing!

Meet the multitalented ingredient - niacinamide
17th May 2024
Hey Plumster,
You’ve probably encountered the word “niacinamide” in the ever-evolving world of skincare. This versatile ingredient has become increasingly familiar for its range of benefits that make it a true standout ingredient in any skincare routine.
But, why is niacinamide a MUST-HAVE in your routine for healthy and glowing skin?
Let me help you!
In this issue of Beauty Simplified, let’s delve into the wonders of Niacinamide.
What is Niacinamide?
Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin naturally found in basic food items like leafy greens and cereals. However, when applied topically to the skin, it truly shines.
What does niacinamide do to your skin?
Niacinamide helps fade blemishes and brighten your skin. But there’s more! It also helps strengthen the skin barrier, locking in moisture and preventing irritants from entering.
The result: smoother, more hydrated skin – a foundation for a healthy and radiant complexion.
Apart from this niacinamide offers a myriad of other benefits:
🧪Brightens and Evens Skin Tone: Regular use of niacinamide can help fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, leaving you with a brighter, more even-toned complexion.
🧪Regulates sebum production: Niacinamide helps control excess sebum and thus prevents the appearance of acne.
🧪Reduces Redness and Inflammation: Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm redness and reduce irritation in your skin.
🧪Minimizes Pores: By regulating oil production, niacinamide helps minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, resulting in a smoother texture.
🧪Protects from Environmental Damage: Niacinamide boasts antioxidant properties that help shield your skin from free radicals caused by UV rays and pollution.
Rather than just adding it to your routine, it's crucial to understand the best possible usage for maximum results.
How to seamlessly integrate niacinamide into your skincare routine
✔️Choose efficacy over quantity: Look for high-quality niacinamide products like serums, moisturizers, and toners. Niacinamide serums are typically the fastest way to get targeted results as it is formulated with high concentration and penetrate deeper into the skin. However, other products like creams, toners, and sunscreens can also deliver this powerful ingredient.
✔️Layer your products: Niacinamide plays well with others! Feel free to integrate it into your existing routine. Aim to have at least one product formulated with niacinamide as a key player. However, ensure to do a patch test before adding any new product to your routine.
✔️Consistency is Key: As with any skincare ingredient, consistent use is crucial to maximize benefits. Incorporate niacinamide into your daily routine and be patient – great things take time!
How much niacinamide can you use on your skin?
The optimal efficacy of niacinamide is typically observed within the range of 2% to 20% in a skincare routine that includes all the different products you use.
However, it significantly depends on your skin type and the concern you aim to address.
You must always start with a lower concentration and gradually increase depending on your skin’s tolerance.
Ready to embark on your niacinamide journey? Explore our power-packed niacinamide squad!
Niacinamide is a scientifically-backed ingredient with the potential to transform your skin. Embrace its power and say hello to healthier, happier skin!
Stay glowing,
With love💜

Don’t worry, I’m here to help. In this edition of Beauty Simplified, let’s learn about the causes of oily skin and how to find the right sunscreen.
What is meant by oily skin?
Oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which produce more sebum than necessary. It could be due to genetics, hormonal fluctuations, diet, and skincare habits.
And how do you know if you have oily skin? If you struggle with enlarged pores, acne breakouts, and a persistently shiny complexion, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), then your skin type is surely oily.
So, do you need sunscreen if your skin is oily?
Absolutely! Contrary to popular belief, oily skin is not immune to sun damage. With oily skin, you are equally vulnerable to sunburn, premature aging, and other adverse effects of UV rays. Therefore, you need to find a sunscreen that protects your skin without aggravating oily skin problems.
How to choose a sunscreen for oily skin
When selecting a sunscreen for oily skin, ensure it checks the following boxes:
- It is lightweight and easily absorbed into the skin.
- It does not leave a white cast.
- It contains skin-loving ingredients like green tea, cica, niacinamide, etc.
- It offers broad-spectrum protection and gives a matte finish.
And now that you have found the tips for choosing the right sunscreen for oily skin, don't forget to slather on that SPF goodness daily and keep the reapplications rolling every 3 hours for maximum protection. :)

Hey Plumster,
If there's one hair woe we've all faced, it's the battle against unmanageable hair. And when summer is at its peak, the struggle gets even more real.
With humidity and rising temperatures, it's no surprise that your hair decides to go its own way, sometimes leaving you with a rough, tangled mess.
But let’s look at the silver lining, a good hair care routine can help tame those summer frizzies and keep your locks nourished and healthy even in this scorching heat.
So, in today’s issue of “Beauty Simplified”, I am here to discuss
A great hair care routine
💆Step- 1: Oil your hair, come rain or shine
When the summer heat dries out your strands, your favorite oil ‘champi’ can work wonders. This age-old tradition strengthens your roots, encourages hair growth, and gives a natural shine to your hair.
Opt for lighter oils like coconut, olive, or onion to combat the summer heat. And remember, a couple of hours before shampooing is all you need to give your hair the nourishment it craves. Avoid leaving it on overnight.
💆Step- 2: Gentle cleansing is the key
Gently cleanse off all the dirt and grime from your hair with a mild shampoo that cleanses without stripping away your hair's natural oils. Look for ingredients like coconut milk, peptides, and ceramides for a nourishing cleanse.
Ideal frequency to wash your hair, you ask? There’s no right answer. Ideally, washing your hair two to three times a week is sufficient. But if your scalp gets too sweaty, you can wash it more often
💆Step- 3: Condition, condition, condition
A good conditioner not only hydrates but also helps keep frizz at bay. Focus on the ends, and treat yourself to a weekly hair mask with ingredients like avocado or coconut oil for some extra TLC.
💆Step- 4: Seal in moisture and shine with a hair serum
Finish off your hair care routine with a nourishing hair serum with ingredients like hibiscus, coconut, etc. Not only does it detangle and moisturize, but it also adds that extra shine for a flawless finish.
Summer Hair Care Tips
🪮 Brush your hair in gentle strokes to avoid breakage.
🪮 Minimize heat styling to protect your locks.
🪮 Schedule regular trims to keep split ends at bay.
🪮 Rinse with cold water for added shine.
🪮 Maintain a balanced lifestyle for healthy hair from within.
🪮 Opt for loose hairstyles and satin accessories to minimize friction and frizz.
🪮 Give your hair a breather by air-drying between washes to prevent fungal infections and breakage.
Just a few tweaks in your routine can go a long way to maintain your hair health in summer too! To know more, head over to the detailed blog. Also, find some curated hair care products here.

Hey Plumster,
In an ever-evolving world of skincare, finding the secret to healthy, glowing skin is definitely tricky.
Therefore, as your friend and a beauty advisor, I strive to arm you with important yet basic beauty knowledge that you need for a confident, radiant you through our weekly newsletter ‘Beauty Simplified’.
So, for today’s issue, I want to start with a question: is a face toner included in your skincare routine?
If not, it's time to level up. Because, trust me, this isn't just another step; it's a game-changer.
What are skin toners?
Toners play a crucial role in keeping your skin healthy, hydrated, and fresh.
They are water-based liquids that cleanse and reduce the appearance of open pores.
Moreover, they absorb quickly and help refresh your skin by removing any leftover dirt, oil, or makeup residue.
The result: Your skin feels clean and nicely prepped for the rest of your skincare routine.
But wait, there's more!
Toners aren't just about cleansing. They also pack a punch of other benefits:
Benefits of face toners
✅They minimize pores: Toners can help minimize the appearance of pores and boost hydration.
Many toners contain astringents that help regulate oil production and tighten pores, leaving your skin oil-free and non-greasy.
✅They restore pH balance: Our skin has a natural pH between 4.8 and 5.5.
External aggressors like pollution and harsh cleansers can mess with this balance, making your skin feel oily or dry.
Toners help restore that healthy balance, giving you a natural glow.
Choosing the right toner for your skin
Be it oily or mature, sensitive or normal skin, a suitable toner for your specific needs can elevate your skincare game.
🧴For oily skin, astringent, green tea and salicylic acid-containing toners are your BFFs. Niacinamide is also a great option if you’re seeking to tackle blemishes.
🧴Mature skin can significantly benefit from toners with antioxidants and hydrating ingredients.
🧴Sensitive and dry skin - Pick toners with ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, and hyaluronic acid.
🧴For normal skin, you can pick up the multitasking niacinamide toner that will help brighten the skin too!
Now that you know the ABCs of face toner, here’s how to use them.
The right way to use a face toner.
You can use a face toner in two ways:
Ready to give face toners a try?
Explore our curated selection of premium toners, meticulously chosen to cater to every skin type and concern.
With a little help from these skincare superheroes, luminous, glowing skin is within reach.

Body mist vs perfume: When to use what!
15th March, 2024
Hey Plumster,
Ever caught a whiff of something so amazing, that it instantly transported you to a different world?
Well, that’s the magic of fragrance.
A good scent can boost your mood, amp up your confidence and can even be the perfect finishing touch to any outfit.
But with so many tempting options out there, navigating the fragrance world can feel like solving an ancient puzzle, right?
But fear not. I’ve got your back. In today’s “Beauty Simplified” issue, let’s dive into a very popular question: Body mist or perfume?
The Allure of Body Mists
Picture this: a gentle breeze carrying a heavenly fragrance, or something that reminds you of your favorite floral note, or maybe even, the aroma of a cupcake baking.
That's the vibe of a body mist – a light, airy fragrance, perfect for everyday wear.
It's like the ballerina of the fragrance world: graceful and subtle adding a touch of elegance without overpowering the room.
But here’s the key - timing is everything!
When’s the best time for a body mist?
Prepping for a Big Day: A quick spritz before a presentation can instantly lift your spirits and confidence.
Beating the Blahs: Monday morning? A touch of your favorite scent can work wonders for your mood.
Post-Shower Refresh: Spritzing onto damp skin allows the fragrance to meld beautifully, creating a subtle yet long-lasting aura.
And now when you’re well-versed with body mists, let’s move to perfumes.
The Power Player: A Statement Maker in a Bottle
Packed with a higher concentration of fragrant oils, perfumes offer a bolder, more enduring scent.
Think of them as the red carpet-worthy gowns of the fragrance world – a statement piece that commands attention.
So, when should you apply perfumes?
Special Occasions: A spritz of your signature perfume can elevate your evening attire and impression.
A Long Day Out: Perfumes boast superior staying power, keeping you smelling fabulous throughout the day (or night!).
Additionally, you wanna make heads turn as soon as you enter a room? Target your pulse points (wrists, inner elbows) for a more effective and long-lasting
stay.
But going back to the question :
Which one is better? Body mist or perfume?
Honestly, there's no single "winner" in the body mist vs. perfume battle!
Both offer unique benefits and cater to different situations.
Think of them as tools in your fragrance arsenal – body mists for everyday elegance and perfumes for those show-stopping moments.
But, here’s the tricky part!
How do you choose the perfect fragrance for you?
Consider your skin type (sensitive souls, opt for gentler options; the rest, anything works!), and scent preference.
Do you like fruity or floral? What about something that makes you smell like cupcakes or beaches and more?
And of course, consider the occasion. I suggest using fruity and floral for the day and muskier notes at night.
And here’s the last word!
The world of fragrance is personal and playful.
Experiment with different scents, discover what makes you feel confident and beautiful, and let your unique fragrance story unfold!
To know more, read the detailed blog here .
P.S. The secret to enhancing the longevity of your fragrance?
Layer your fragrances!
To get a long-lasting, unforgettable fragrance appearance, layer your body mist with a perfume of the same scent on your pulse points. (you can indulge in shower gels and body lotions too!)
With love,
Divya

Hey Plumster a.k.a #GirlBoss,
Today, you’re probably being flooded with messages and emails which are empowering and some that are ‘changing the narrative’.😉
But amidst this flood, we want to take a moment to celebrate and resonate with not just women, but you – 50 SHADES of YOU!
‘Girl Power’ takes countless forms, from the avid bookworm soaking up knowledge to the mesmerizing dancer captivating the stage with a sun-kissed glow.
We're the dream-weaving artists and the star-reaching scientists, each contributing a unique brushstroke to paint the world with our aspirations.
That just goes to say that ‘one size fits all’ doesn’t really exist anymore. In fact, we're rocking the "right kinda baggage" of experiences, each unique and empowering.
We're “darin' but carin'”, building each other up and showing the world what “boss mode” truly looks like. We cry and laugh and even announce “Pushpa I love tears”, unapologetically and freely.
So, especially today, dust off your "main character energy" and embrace your "me o'clock"!😉
Whether it's “pursuing your nappyness” (because self-care is essential, girl!), or “calling the shots” in the boardroom, remember: you are powerful, unique, and you are unstoppable!
With this same crazy energy, we at Plum, are celebrating the diversity of our #GirlSquad who inspire and slay, with red lips & w(h)ine sips every single day.
We’re celebrating the fact that women can be vulnerable yet powerful, delicate yet resilient, and all this at the same time. Because, let's face it, who says a “keen queen” can't also be a softie with a heart of gold?
And so, we took all the above, poured it in a bottle and called it ‘50 shades of women’! Coz this fragrance captures the fun, boldness, confidence, sassiness, strength, and 45 other magnificent details, that define each one of us.
Skillfully formulated (for 6 whole months) with notes of raspberry, bergamot, patchouli, and vanilla, this fragrance is here to celebrate your bold femininity and contrasting blends of womanhood.
Cause’ we “gotta groww with godfidence”.
What else can I say? Embrace your individuality and raise a glass (or a teacup), to EVERY aspect of being a woman!
Cheers! And I had to say it (however cliché) - Happy Women’s Day. 😊

SPF: here’s how to look beyond the number
23rd February, 2024
Hey Plumster,
Do you often find yourself squinting at sunscreen labels?
Wondering if the SPF number printed on the tube truly holds weight, or if it's just another marketing ploy?
If yes, this issue of “Beauty Simplified”(your weekly beauty bulletin🧾), will answer your questions.
SPF: here’s how to look beyond the number
23rd February, 2024
Hey Plumster,
Do you often find yourself squinting at sunscreen labels?
Wondering if the SPF number printed on the tube truly holds weight, or if it's just another marketing ploy?
If yes, this issue of “Beauty Simplified” (your weekly beauty bulletin🧾), will answer your questions.
I’m sure, for a lot of us, choosing sunscreen can be quite a challenge, especially if not well-versed with reading labels.
For instance, on a sunscreen label, there are filters, SPF, ingredients, and a list of other specifications that can make this as difficult as choosing a career option!
On the other hand, it can be much easier to pick sunscreens if you know what exactly the text on these labels mean and what exactly is their role in sun protection.
So, let’s start with UV rays.
What are UV rays?
UV or ultraviolet rays are electromagnetic radiation emitted from the sun. There are two types- UVA and UVB.
Together, they can cause sunburn, hyperpigmentation, premature aging and other forms of damage to skin. UVA rays form 95% of the UV radiation which reaches the earth and can penetrate deep into our skin.
UVB rays have a shorter wavelength and can only reach the outer layer of your skin called the epidermis.
You need a good sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays.
Now to clear up the confusion that most of us have, let’s understand - What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.
SPF is a number that corresponds to the ability of your sunscreen to protect your skin against UVB rays. The higher the number, the better!
However, the amount of UVB protection offered is not directly proportional - i.e., SPF 50 is not twice as strong as SPF 25. Instead, the amount of protection it offers increases gradually.
For instance, while SPF 35 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays, SPF 50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays.
Generally, as a thumb rule, you must apply an SPF of 35 or more.
However, given India's intense sun exposure, there’s a preference for using sunscreen with an SPF of 50 and above.
And the story doesn’t end here!
Your sunscreen is effective only if it protects you against both UVA and UVB rays. And that's where the importance of a PA rating comes into play.
So, what is PA?
PA stands for ‘Protection Grade of UVA’. It's a scorecard of your sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVA rays (a greater number of pluses (+) equals higher protection).
Like SPF, it ranges from low to extremely high, with dermatologists suggesting a minimum PA rating of +++ or above.
Therefore, how does one choose sunscreen?
While choosing sunscreen, be sure to pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen which means it ensures comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Even when you are indoors, opt for a minimum SPF of 35 with a PA +++ rating, as UV rays can travel through windowpanes and clouds as well.
But for those beach vacations and street shopping under the sun, nothing lower than SPF 50 PA+++ will suffice!
And like I keep saying, sunscreen is not an option, but a necessity for your skin.
So, never skip using that sunscreen. 😊

Hey Plumsters,🌸
Welcome to the latest issue of "Beauty Simplified" where I answer your questions and debunk viral myths.
In today's issue, let’s learn about another mind-blogging topic -
face serum,⚗️
the newbie that has taken the skincare world by storm.
I am here to simplify them for you and answer all your what, why, and which about them!
Let's get started 🚎
What are face serums?
Face serums are lightweight skincare products containing a higher concentration of active ingredients. They address specific skincare concerns and provide various benefits depending on their ingredients.
Moreover, they also hydrate and brighten your skin, clear dark spots, reduce acne, and give you an even skin tone.🧴
What are the different types of face serums? *
Surely, you now understand the various serums and their benefits.
But with so many choices, it can feel like picking a favorite ice cream flavor at an avant-garde gelato shop🍦
But nothing to worry about, I’m here to help you.
How to pick the right face serum?
Here are some factors you need to consider while looking for a face serum for your skin:
🫠Skin concern:
Different actives work on specific skin issues.
For instance,
✔️If you dream of brighter and glowing skin, you can pick brightening serums like niacinamide and Vitamin C.
✔️If your skin is dry, you need hydrating serums like a hyaluronic acid serum.
✔️For youthful skin, you can opt for anti-aging serums like retinol and resveratrol.
✔️If your pain point is acne and blackheads, use an acne-fighting serum like salicylic acid.
Identifying your concern will help zero down the ingredients you need.
🫠Age:
Your choice of serums should also be determined by your age -
⭐In your 20s, you can opt for hyaluronic acid and niacinamide for adequate hydration and nourishment.
⭐In your 30s, you might need a retinol serum to fight off signs of aging.
🫠Skin type:
You can also pick a serum by identifying your skin type.
📌Hyaluronic acid works best for dry and dehydrated skin.
📌For oily and acne-prone skin, you need acne-fighting serums like salicylic acid, and AHA and BHA.
📌For Normal skin, you can pick a hydrating or brightening serum.
Should you try them?
Definitely! Face serums can elevate your skincare by targeting your skin concerns better and acting faster.
It can effectively treat your skin concerns and help you achieve clear and glowing skin.
(Psst...Take my word for it - they are not a marketing fad but your skin’s true friend!).
Still confused? Learn more about face serums in the detailed blog here.
*Remember to always do a patch test before using any face serum.
Always follow up your routine with moisturizer and sunscreen, because, just like pizza🍕 and cheese🧀, they're better together.
Be Good!🍀

Should you really apply sunscreen every day?

Should you really apply sunscreen every day?
20th January , 2023
Hey Plumsters,
I am back with the next issue of ‘Beauty Simplified’ where we answer your beauty questions and debate on viral topics. For this week, I am going to talk about the basic yet most-talked-about query:
Do you really need sunscreens daily?😕
Honestly, dermatologists and beauty magazines have always emphasized the importance of using sunscreen every day, but like many of you, I paid little attention.
I always thought why spend on sunscreens when I am exposed to the sun for hardly a few minutes in a day? After all, our mothers and grandmothers were never so bothered about sunscreens and had great skin, right?
Well, it seems like I was so Wrong, all along!
So, after the noise around sunscreens grew loud, I decided to delve into it myself.
(well, one major reason for this deep dive was a study that said that using sunscreens daily is the easiest way to look younger, piquing my interest. After all, who doesn't want to look forever young without indulging in anti-aging routines? 🙄) right?
After reading tons of medical journals and talking to a couple of dermatologists, (my father is a doctor, bruh!😛, I have access!!)
Here are the three findings that changed me from anti-sunscreen to ultra-pro sunscreen😁
1. Sunscreen is more than a cosmetic
Sunscreen is a photoprotective skincare product that shields your skin against the harmful UV radiation of the sun.
Basically, there are two types of sunscreens:
- Physical sunscreens Physical blockers contain titanium oxide or zinc oxide grounded in fine particles. They stay on your skin’s surface and deflect the UV rays away from the skin like a mirror.
- Chemical/mineral sunscreen
These contain organic or carbon ingredients that form a layer over your skin and absorb the sun rays before they get a chance to penetrate your skin (just like a sponge🧽)
I realized that a hybrid sunscreen is the best kind as has the goodness of both types.
2. Sunscreens can significantly improve your skin’s health.
Sunscreens literally act as a dome over your skin against dangerous UV radiation that can cause SKIN CANCER. (trust me, I am not kidding)
Therefore, it effectively :
🌟 Makes you look younger (read the study here)
🌟 Prevents premature aging, keeping away wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging.
🌟 Prevents uneven skin tone, dark spots, and patchy skin.
🌟 And oh yes, saves your skin from sunburns.
1. The more SPF you use, the better the protection.
SPF or Sun Protection Factor is the numerical measure of how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVA rays. On the other hand, PA+++ protects your skin against UVB rays. While the minimum SPF required for sun protection is 30, dermatologists suggest using sunscreens with at least an SPF of 50 PA +++ for the Indian subcontinent for complete protection against harmful UV rays.
But should you really use it every day?
YES, YES, and YES! (without any second thoughts!)
Here are some interesting facts about sun rays that convinced me to use sunscreens daily if I want to look younger and have healthy skin:
☀️UV rays are present on cloudy days as well.
🌞UV rays travel through GLASS WINDOWS!
🌞The ozone layer that filters the harmful UV and UB sun rays is much WEAKER and thinner and thus less capable of saving you than it was years ago.
This is why you must apply sunscreen daily, wherever you are, and whatever season it is.
Final takeaway
“Do you need sunscreen daily?”
Whenever this question pops up in your mind, think about how our body needs water.
Even if you do not feel thirsty, or it's raining or cold, your body still needs enough water to function. If you do not drink water, you can get dehydrated and fall sick.
The same goes for sunscreen. Come what may, you must apply sunscreen EVERY DAY to prevent sun damage, which is not always visible until it's too late.
I found out that 2% Niacinamide & Rice Water Hybrid Sunscreen not only has SPF 50 PA+++ but also brightens your skin in the process. You can explore the other sunscreens based on your skin type here.
To know more about how to choose sunscreen for your skin, when to apply it, and more, read our detailed blog here.
Stay tuned for the next issue of Beauty Simplified where I have another exciting topic to discuss with you!
Till then,

Flaky scalp? Is it dandruff or dryness?
24th November, 2023
Hey Plumsters🌸,
Winter is almost at the door, and for this week of ‘Beauty Simplified’, I am here to talk about the most common hair concern that often tags along with this cold season -
dandruff!🤮
Flaky scalp? Is it dandruff or dryness?
Hey Plumsters🌸,
24th November, 2023
Winter is almost at the door, and for this week of ‘Beauty Simplified’, I am here to talk about the most common hair concern that often tags along with this cold season -
dandruff!🤮
(Or is it really dandruff?❓)
Witnessing flakiness? Hold on, it might not be dandruff!
Trust me, winters can be the worst nightmare for your hair, (or am I just unlucky?😏).
While I can smoothly flip my hair just like the models from the TV commercials for the entire year, as soon as I put on my sweaters and jackets, it takes a drastic U-turn, showing me attitude with frizz and hair fall. (Insert: your backstabbing frenemy!)
Honestly, I can still somehow manage these symptoms, but the personal snowfall❄️ that I see on my outfits every time I brush my hair is something I completely hate about this holiday season! (I am talking about flakes, bruh!)
So, after spending a couple of weeks on home remedies and “influencer-approved” hacks, this year, I finally took the trip to the dermatologist, fearing the worst. (Hi, Anxiety!)
Thankfully, my dermat saved the day. 🥰
While I was dreading dandruff, it was a relief to know that my scalp was just going through a phase of extreme dryness and not dandruff (phew!).
(Isn’t flakiness always a sign of dandruff? What the heck is a dry scalp, right?)
Wrong!
Dandruff and dry scalp, though they seem the same, are significantly different in terms of symptoms, causes, and line of treatments. But how?
Let’s start with the basics.
What is a dry scalp?
A dry scalp is just the same as dry skin. Simple!
When your scalp gets excessively dry and is inadequately moisturized, it gets irritated and flaky.
How will you identify a dry scalp?
If you have a dry scalp, you will see small white flakes falling from your hair, every time you scrub or itch your scalp.
You may or may not have itchiness, depending on the dryness level.
What do you need to do?
Nourish your scalp!
- Use gentler hair products that do not strip off the natural oils from your hair while still washing away the grime. 🧴
- You can indulge in a weekly deep oil massage that nourishes your scalp and hair. (Bonus: hair growth and silky hair)💆
Try the Olive & Macadamia Nutri-Shield Pre-Shampoo Hair Oil that deeply nourishes your hair and scalp without being sticky.
What is dandruff?
Technically speaking, dandruff is a mild skin condition caused by the overproduction of oil and fungus on your scalp.
No, this fungus doesn’t mean you’re not taking care of yourself, everyone’s scalp has them.
However, for those with naturally oily scalps, these fungi thrive a little too well on the excess sebum, which results in dead skin cells clumping together to form white or yellow flakes.
What does dandruff look like?
If you suffer from dandruff, you will witness more and bigger flakes than usual that can be oily and yellow.
If your condition is serious, you could also notice red, scaly scalp, significant itchiness, and hair fall. (Yikes!)
What do you need to do?
If you have mild dandruff, don't miss out on your hair wash day! (even on days you just want to be a messy panda🐼)
- Use a specialised dandruff shampoo and exfoliate gently to remove dead skin and oil build-up regularly.
- Avoid using too many products on your scalp to prevent further build-up.
- Try using a dandruff control treatment.
- And, if your condition doesn't improve despite making these changes, get medical aid.
I suggested the tree tea range to my sister which includes a mild shampoo, scalp scrub, scalp serum and conditioner. (It worked and I got her new dress as a reward for solving her issue 😉)
How are they different?
Let's get back to the main question. How do you differentiate between the two?
Well, the best way to differentiate between the two is to observe your flakes.
- If the flakes are small and dry, you have dryness.
- On the other hand, if the flakes feel oily to touch, you have dandruff.
Symptoms | Dandruff | Dry scalp |
---|---|---|
Itchy scalp | Yes | May or may not |
Scalp appearance | Oily, may be red or inflamed | Scaly, dry |
Types of flakes | Large and oily, either yellow or white in appearance | Smaller, dry |
Takeaway
Dry scalp and dandruff are NOT the same. It is important to know the difference because by not correctly identifying them, you might end up opting for the wrong line of treatment, resulting in more issues.
Though I wish, you never have to face either of the two, star this email and come back every time you witness fresh snowfall on your outfits, and read the detailed blog for more information. Might as well subscribe to our newsletter and share with your loved ones too. 😊

Green Tea or Salicylic Acid? Which is the better pimple fighter?🤨
November 3, 2023
🌟Hello Plumsters, 🌟We're back with another edition of 'Beauty Simplified,'📋 where we discuss common skincare vows and look for their sure-shot remedies.
Today, we're here to find the solution to the skin’s worst nightmare-
ACNE…
Ever had a pesky pimple play party-pooper on your face right before a big day? Ugh! We feel you! 😩
Pimples, acne, zits – they go by many names, but one thing's for sure, they are a perfect recipe for a bad mood and spoilt day!
But guess what? The war is not lost, as we are here with the two strongest pimple fighters - Green Tea 🍵 and Salicylic Acid! 🧖♀️
Let’s break them down separately!
The subtle magic of green tea!
For sure, drinking green tea not only helps get you that perfect figure💃 but also keeps many diseases at bay. (yes, just like that!)
But let us tell you that it is a superhero for your skin too 🦸:-
Green tea is packed with antioxidants that
🌟calm your skin down,
🌟reduce irritation,
🌟fight off signs of aging
🌟soothe your skin
🌟control oil production
Also, it acts like a bouncer for your pores to keep them clear and prevent acne from crashing the party. 🦠(Now that is what you need!)
Looks like a win, right?
Wait, hear me out, coz now we have another equally powerful ingredient, that can change your skin for the better.
Meet salicylic acid! 🌳
Salicylic Acid, a BHA, is the cool kid on the block – it dives deep into the pores to flush out all gunk and impurities.
It's like that magic eraser that penetrates into your skin to remove dead skin cells, excess sebum, and clogged pores to tackle acne right at the source. 🧼✨
But which one should you pick?🤜💥
This could really be a tricky question, isn’t it?
Honestly, your choice significantly depends on your skin type and concern. (yes, the same usual stuff 🙄)
but let’s break it down!
Green tea is perfect for oily acne-prone, sensitive skin that has fewer, occasional acne.
Salicylic acid is better for acne-prone skin, frequented by whiteheads, blackheads, and active acne.
In short, if you have oily skin and tend to get acne once in a while, opt for green tea in your routine. But if you have acne-prone skin and are frequently attacked by active, inflamed acne, make salicylic acid your BFF!
What do we recommend?
Get the best of both worlds and include both in your skincare routine.
While salicylic acid will take down the acne troublemakers (read clogged pores and dead skin), green tea will control sebum production, and keep your skin calm and under control;
just like the Avengers of skincare right on your face! 💥💚🌟
Want to try something out?
We have the best formulations for oily skin and pesky acne ( Drum rolls!).
Try our green tea range which includes -
Green Tea Pore Cleansing Face Wash,

4 intriguing facts about skin barrier every Plumster should know

4 intriguing facts about skin barrier every Plumster should know

Hello Plumsters,
We're back with another edition of 'Beauty Simplified,' 📋 where we dive into skincare topics that might have piqued your curiosity and you need answers for.
Today, we're here to demystify a lesser-known yet crucial subject: THE SKIN BARRIER
But first… What is skin barrier?
If you enjoy watching influencers and celebrities discuss their skincare routines on social media (after all, it's therapeutic, right?), you've likely encountered the buzzword "skin barrier."
Leading actors have shared the importance of skin barrier, creating a chain reaction where everyone’s been talking about it. And as a Plumster, we think you MUST know all about it, too!
In simple terms, the skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin that fiercely shields it against external aggressors.
It's like your skin’s guardian angel 🧚 that looks after your skin 24/7 (not in a creepy way of course!) and wards off pollutants and allergens, while retaining moisture, keeping your skin plump, healthy, and hydrated.
Here are FOUR intriguing facts that might surprise you about skin barrier:
Fact 1: Strong, but Easily Damaged
While the defense of the skin barrier is strong, it's also fragile and susceptible to damage.
Skin barrier damage can result from excessive exfoliation, the use of too many skincare products, long hot showers 🛀, extreme temperatures, incorrect use of active ingredients, and even waxing.
Furthermore, illnesses, genetic conditions, eczema, smoking, and stress can disrupt your skin barrier.
But the best part is that you can easily identify a compromised barrier and work on its repair.
- Sudden acne breakouts,
- Flaky or dehydrated skin,
- Rough and uneven texture,
- Inflammation,
- Redness
—anything that makes you wonder why your skin is reacting differently is a sign of a compromised skin barrier, and you should take action promptly.
P.s.. If you think you have sensitive skin, there's a high chance you've had a compromised skin barrier for some time.
Fact 2: Repairs Itself
Surprisingly, the skin barrier can repair itself (unlike your broken heart, 💔). Isn't that interesting?
Once you stop using products that harm your skin, your skin barrier can recover in two to three weeks, depending on the extent of the damage, much like the rest of your body.
But, to aid in healing, keep away from active ingredients, fragrances, harsh chemicals, and treatments, and avoid exposing your skin to extreme temperatures and harsh sun.
Fact 3: It's Easier to Protect Your Skin Barrier Than You Think
What if your skin doesn't return to normal after a few weeks? Well, in that case, you'll need to help along - gently and sensibly!
- Opt for a simple, gentle skincare routine consisting only of a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. (Alexa, start detox mode!)
- Ensure you drink enough water to replenish lost hydration.
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! It is crucial to hydrate your skin adequately for barrier repair to help the epidermis heal and retain moisture. Yes, for oily skin too - but use gel moisturizers!
- Stop using all kinds of scrubs, exfoliators, active ingredients, harsh cleansers, etc.
Incorporate barrier-building ingredients into your skincare routine.
Choose ceramide moisturizers and moisture-rich face creams that include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and jojoba oil.
One of the best moisturizers from our range for skin barrier repair is Plum 1% Oat & Allantoin All-day Nourishing Cream.
It’s got ingredients like oats, allantoin, vitamin E, and B5. While oats strengthen your skin barrier by making it more resilient to external irritants, allantoin helps soothe dry and inflamed skin, giving you hydrated and nourished skin.
Final Takeaway!
Your skin barrier is an army of soldiers always alert on the borders, guarding you from external forces and enemies.
The more you take care of it, the easier it will be to get (closer to) that celebrity-inspired dewy look every day.
